Sel, My belt started to sqeak a little at one point, nothing terribly bad but slightly annoying at slow speeds. When I removed the rear wheel (due to a flat), I had to re-adjust the belt and the sqeak stopped. Try adjusting the belt. It may be too tight or too loose. You should have a special tool that came with the bike that checks belt tension. If you need some advise on how to adjust the belt, e-mail me and I'll give you some instructions. As far as the popping (backfiring goes), I have just learned to live with it. It scares the hell out of people at gas stations, but oh well.
